Fact-Checking Policy

Last updated

We want every figure on this site to be traceable to a reliable source. Here's how we try to get there, and where our process has limits.

How we source claims

  • Primary sources first. For tax limits, benefit rules, interest rates, inflation, and economic data, drafts should cite the agency or organization that publishes the number, such as the IRS, the Social Security Administration, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, or the Federal Reserve.
  • Dated and qualified. Figures that change, such as contribution limits, rates, and benefit amounts, should say which year and which jurisdiction they apply to.
  • Nothing invented. Drafts may not invent statistics, quotes, research, credentials, or sources.

Automated checks

  • Every link goes through a central link registry, so outdated destinations can be fixed in one place.
  • We periodically test external links. Our publishing workflow blocks an article that cites a page our checker has marked as dead or not found, and we recheck links in published articles periodically.
  • Our quality checks flag changeable financial, tax, legal, rate, or benefit figures that don't have a nearby citation, so they can be sourced or removed.
  • Calculator formulas are documented on our calculator methodology page.

What our checks can't do

Automated checks confirm structure, links, and whether a citation is present. They can't confirm that every statement is correct. We review and curate every article with the help of AI, but that review can still miss errors, and articles aren't checked by a licensed professional unless a reviewer is named; see our editorial policy for how articles are produced. Rules and numbers also change after publication. Before acting on a specific figure, check the linked source or an official website, and talk with a qualified professional about decisions that depend on your situation.
